Dowling & Neylan principal Dan Neylan didn't have any words prepared for the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Awards for Excellence last Friday night.
"Are you kidding?" he told his wife Michele on the drive down to Brisbane. "Have you seen who we are up against?"
Established in Noosa for more than 36 years, Dowling & Neylan Real Estate has become a leader in real estate; now more than ever.
The company has out-performed its rivals to be awarded the Real Estate Institute of Queensland Medium Agency of the Year for 2012.
The annual awards recognise achievement in the real estate profession with finalists across 14 categories. The Noosa Heads based office was a finalist with All Realty Group, New Farm; Amber Werchon Property, Mooloolaba; Henzells Mooloolaba and Place Newmarket.
The feat follows that of Laguna Real Estate which took out Agency of the Year 2005.
Principal Dan Neylan was both surprised and proud of the great team gathered around him.
In an emotional acceptance speech he noted the support of Michele, his wife, life and business partner for more than 20 years.
He said it took 10 years to win Salesperson of the Year and now another five years to win the Medium Agency of the Year award.
While Dowling & Neylan has a three-metre shop frontage to Hastings Street, he said that in the past year the company had welcomed more than 42,000 guests through their holiday letting, accommodated more than 400 tenants through their permanent letting business and helped 186 couples sell or purchase their property.
"Dowling and Neylan have an impact on the income of over 130 Noosa families through their various divisions," he said.
"We are very surprised to be honoured against such strong agencies. They are the cream of the crop; it's the same people I see striving for excellence year in year out.
"Our company has a different culture to others. Our staff are driven and experienced, we have great systems and constantly look to improve them. We want a team of full service professional agents. People that can't meet that expectation don't stay long, the one's that can, do well and are constantly approached by our competitors.
"I have high expectations of my team, especially the sales division; it's been a very tough ride in real estate over the past few years. Our team has shown a lot of tenacity, it's great to see a silver lining in a difficult year."
Mr Neylan said it was still a buyers' market in the coming year.
"Noosa properties offer excellent value if priced correctly, so buyers should be moving now and thinking long-term," Mr Neylan said.
"Once we get through the state and federal elections, the market will gain confidence further buoyed by the impact of the mining boom coming our way.
"We are expanding, are seeking more sales staff, we are now launching our financial services and if all goes well a second office is on the horizon; 2012 is a year we are very excited about."
As REIQ winners, Dowling & Neylan will automatically progress into the 2012 National Awards for Excellence to be held in Darwin in March.
Dowling & Neylan place high emphasis on building great relationships with the Noosa community. The Noosa Lions Soccer Club benefits from the company and they have sponsored a Noosa team of cars that entered the great Endeavour Foundation rally. This year Dowling & Neylan will have their own car, supported by Domain and several other sponsors.
They are also in their fourth year offering scholarships to Queensland Dance School of Excellence graduates and similar scholarship with The Royal New Zealand Dance School in Wellington.
"A lot of those dancers are performing around the world," Mr Neylan said. "it's very rewarding to see them further their careers and to offer their talent to not just Australia but the world.
"There are a lot of traits that performing artists need including the ability to strive for perfection through adversity; they are the qualities we appreciate and promote in our industry."
Mr Neylan said the award win showed that just because you live in a regional area doesn't mean you cannot strive for excellence.
"It's possible, you just have to pursue that goal. You can have a great business in a beautiful place like Noosa...you just have to work at it."
